Ten Writing Tips for Kids

Ten Terrific Writing Tips

  1. Write about the things you know the most about. You know more about traveling to Grandma's house than time travel. You know more about dogs than dinosaurs.

  2. Think about your story when you're not writing. Fall asleep thinking about it. Think about it on the way to school. The more you think the easier it is to write.

  3. Write using the same words you use when you talk. If you say something is humongous then write humongous. Don't write big just because it's easier to spell.

  4. Don't start with -- One day... Once there was... Once upon a time... This is my story... They've already been used a million times. Be original.

  5. Keep it simple. Good stories don't have to be long. A short story that has a good beginning, middle, and end is better than a long story that has no purpose.

  6. Use lots of details like colors, sizes, places and names.

  7. Don't write the entire story at one time. Write the beginning and then revise it. Write the middle and then revise it. Write the ending and then revise it. And then revise the whole story again.

  8. Beware of starting sentences with "And then..."

  9. Read your story out loud. Make sure every sentence makes sense.

  10. Don't write THE END. They're not magic words. You have to write an ending to your story that makes sense.
